OUR SUMO WRESTLERS WIN GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS AT WORLD COMBAT GAMES

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The twice world champion U.Byambajav (+115 kg) October 19 became a world champion while his teammate O.Osokhbayar (85 kg) grabbed a silver medal at the sumo competitions of the World Combat Games in Russia's Saint Petersburg city.

U.Byambajav, who has been demonstrating his skills on the silver screen in USA, besides competing at the round arena of sumo wrestling beat Russians E.Karasal and V.Margiev in his bronze and gold medal matches at the men open division where five wrestlers from four countries competed.

The Mongolian team with nineteen athletes currently is at the fifth place in the medal list with one gold, three silver and two bronze medals. The host country Russia is leading the list with nine gold, two silver and eight bronze medals, followed by Japan and France.

The World Combat Games are an international multi-sport event featuring combat sports and martial arts. Fifteen Olympic and non-Olympic sports are currently on the programme: aikido, boxing, fencing, judo, ju-jitsu, karate, kendo, kickboxing, Muay Thai, sambo, savate, sumo, taekwondo, wrestling and wushu.

The World Combat Games were initiated by SportAccord, the umbrella organization for international sports federations and organizers of sports events, in order to bring these sports closer to a worldwide public. The Games are accompanied by a cultural program that reflects the ancient traditions and values of martial arts as well as well as their contribution to modern society.

This is the second combat event, after the first one in Beijing in 2010, where Russia led the medal table with 18 gold medals, followed by China (15) and the Ukraine (7). The event will end on October 26 with an impressive closing ceremony.
