Prime Minister visits Khushigt Valley airport construction
The Prime Minister of Mongolia N.Altankhuyag Monday hosted the “Hours of Construction” meeting to get acquainted with construction work progress at the international airport being built in Khushigt Valley in Tov Province.
The construction of the airport in Khushigt Valley began last June. According to Khushigt Valley International Airport Project Director N.Enkhbat, during the last four months overburden stripping has been done on 2.8 million square meters of land so far, completing 94 percent of this year’s plan. Earth-moving works have begun and the erection of terminals and a flight control tower will begin next year, he added.
After the introduction to the construction projects at the international airport, the Prime Minister praised the intensive progress of the construction in a short time, and said the airport will be able to be operational on schedule.
The project is being implemented by 700 professionals and workers, and 80 engineering and technical experts from Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Great Britain and the Philippines. Moreover, more than 180 units of machinery and high-tech equipment are being used on site.
According to estimates, construction of the project requires 49.5 billion JPY (over 505 million USD). The project is being financed from a soft loan from Japan’s official developmental assistance program.
The new airport will have two runways and will meet international flight security standards. The airport terminal will be able to serve 1,100 passengers an hour and 1,650,000 annually by 2019. Its annual capacity of freight goods will be 11,900 tons and its aerodrome monitoring will use the modern 4E system.
