Mongolian desert drive for charity
A CAR fanatic from East Peckham is set to brave sub--zero temperatures in the Mongolian desert to raise money for charity.
Andrew Poynter, of Tonbridge Road, is hoping a 10,000-mile trek through countries including Italy, Turkey and Russia will generate sponsorship for good causes such as Hospice in the Weald and a unit for kidney dialysis.
Along with two friends, the 63-year-old roof designer hopes to complete the Mongol Rally within six weeks.
The trio plan to set off in a 1.3-litre Hyundai Accent on July 14 and have chosen a route which will also take them through France, Switzerland, Greece and Kazakhstan, before the finish line in Mongolia.
Mr Poynter said: "There are 1,000 miles of desert to cover in Mongolia and it will drop to minus ten in the evenings."
More than £300 has already been raised collecting money in a bucket and allowing donors to sign the vehicle's bonnet.
Mr Poynter has also sold his Triumph TR7-V8 to help fund the trip and the three have budgeted about £1,500 for fuel.
He added: "We could be the oldest men on the rally."
Some of the money raised will also go to a charity for children in Mongolia.
