INT'L YEAR OF COOPERATIVE ANNOUNCED AT INITIATIVE OF MONGOLIA

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ At initiative of Mongolia, the 66th session of the UN General Assembly officially announced on October 31 the Year of International Cooperatives for 2012.

Opening speeches were given by Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, a president of the 66th Session; Asha-Rose Mtengeti Migiro, a Deputy Secretary-General of the UN; and by Gordon Brown, a former PM of the Great Britain.

Then, a department director of Mongolia's Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry M.Bayarmagnai made a statement at the launch of the International Year of Cooperatives. He highlighted that the Launch of this Year coincides with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mongolia's membership in the United Nations.

“Cooperatives, as economic enterprises and as autonomous self-help organizations, play an important role in fostering inclusive and sustainable economic and social development, poverty reduction, employment generation and food security. They represent a model of economic enterprise, which when effectively implemented, promotes democratic and human values as well as environmental sustainability. Cooperatives also promote social integration and cohesion as they are a means of empowering the poor and marginalized groups. The cooperative sector, especially in developing countries, contributes to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015,” Mr. Bayarmagnai said.

“In recognition of the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development throughout the world, and to further strengthen cooperatives worldwide, the UN declares 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives.

"Since its accession to the United Nations as a full-fledged member-state 50 years ago, Mongolia has been endeavoring to contribute to the common efforts of the international community, initiating a number of UN resolutions, including that on Cooperatives in Social Development,” he stressed.

Mr. Bayarmagnai said the International Year of Cooperatives seeks to encourage the growth and establishment of cooperatives worldwide and added that this strengthening of cooperatives requires long-term efforts. “...Hence, a road map or plan of action is proposed to be developed so that to ensure the continued promotion of cooperatives and effective follow-up to the activities envisaged beyond the International Year of Cooperatives. To help these objectives, an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) under the title 'Cooperatives in Social Development: Beyond 2012' was held in Ulaanbaatar from 3-6 May 2011,” he added.
