Sheffield trio set off on Mongolia adventure

Three Sheffield lads have set off on a 10,000 mile adventure from London to Mongolia to raise money for a trio of charities - in their trusty 27-year-old Ford Fiesta, Poppy.

The lads are hoping to raise £1,500 to be split between three charities - The Brain Tumour Charity, Cavendish Cancer Care and Cool Earth.

The team – called Eat, Sleep, Rally, Repeat – is made up of Harry Hardiker, aged 24, of Cockayne Place, Meersbrook, Scott Mathers, 29, from Woodseats Road, Woodseats, and Tom Edis, 21, of Leadmill Court, Sheffield city centre.

Harry told The Star they had signed up for the challenge because they were bored of their ‘mundane’ lives and decided they needed an adventure.

He said: “In preparation for the rally we have been doing a lot of driving around Sheffield.
“This has helped massively as the potholes in Sheffield could be compared to those in Mongolia!

“Seriously though, we just hope the car makes it to Dover.”

A total of 500 teams is taking part in the rally, setting off from Battersea Park in London at the weekend.

The route to Mongolia will take them through the fjords of Scandinavia, vast Siberian forests, dried-up seas of Kazakhstan and the sprawling mass of the Gobi Desert.

There is a start and a finish line but participants are expected find their own route to Mongolia.

Scott said: “With our complete lack of mechanical knowledge, terrible sense of direction and abysmal map-reading skills this challenge is right up our street.”

Harry said he chose to support the brain tumour charity after his cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumour five years ago.

He said: “As a group of friends we could not just sit back and let others carry the flag for these great causes.

“Hopefully by taking part in the Mongol Rally we can do a lot of good for those who need it.”

Harry said the boys had been backed in their endeavour by the Bill Plant driving school.
