President of European Commission receives honorary doctorate from NUM
At the invitation of the President of Mongolia Ts.Elbegdorj, the President of the European Commission, Josй Manuel Barroso, paid an official visit to Mongolia between November 17th and 18th, 2013.
During the visit President Ts.Elbegdorj and the President of the European Commission held official talks and Mr. Barroso also met with Prime Minister N.Altankhuyag.
During the official talks, issues on current relations between Mongolia and the European Commission and ideas on how to deepen bilateral trade, economy, investment, education, science, study and innovation were discussed.
Specific discussions were held over whether to open a diplomatic representative office of the European Commission in Ulaanbaatar and to decide finally on whether to eliminate Mongolia from the European Union"s list of non-market economies. The issue of Mongolia joining the Bologna Declaration was also a topic of interest. The Bologna Declaration is the guiding document in the Bologna process where students and graduates can move freely between countries in a designated European Higher Education Area, using prior qualifications from one country as acceptable entry requirements for further study in another. The talks also touched on the continuation of benefits from the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) to Mongolia as well as challenging regional and international issues.
In the framework of the visit, the President of European Commission Barroso delivered a lecture to students and fellows of National University of Mongolia on “Bilateral relations and development perspective between Mongolia and the European Commission”. Mr. Barroso was honored with the title of honorary doctorate of the National University of Mongolia. Mr. Barroso also made an appearance at the fourth annual European Union Film Festival in Ulaanbaatar making the opening speech.
