Govi-Altai to host Camel Festival

The 8th Camel Festival in the Gobi Desert will take place in Bayantooroi village in Tsogt sum, Govi-Altai aimag on November 9th and 10th, 2013.

The Camel Festival has been annually organized for the improvement of camel breeding and to increase the camel population that has been steadily declining over the past twelve years. The festival aims to highlight the value of camels and the herders` hard work and has been running since 2005, arranged by NGO Development for Altai XXI century.

Govi-Altai has the largest camel population in Mongolia after Umnugovi and Bayankhongor aimags. Govi-Altai is also the place where the Tukhum brown camel selection takes place.

Highlights of the festival include races of one and two year old camels, the best male and female camel races, a camel herder relay race and even a contest between couples who arrive with their camels. There will also be an exhibition and camel products fair.

The organizer of the festival will award the winners, as traditional dictates, with a silver peg for a camel and a tribute.
