Six Baosteel workers remain in ICU
Six workers remained in critical condition Wednesday following an accident at a steel plant in Baoshan district that left two dead and 13 injured, hospital officials said.
The accident occurred Monday morning when a 270-ton ladle of molten metal tipped over at a plant operated by Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp.
The injured workers, who were between 22 and 41 years old, were sent to Shanghai No. 3 People's Hospital. Two workers with less serious injuries were then transferred to Changhai Hospital in Yangpu district, according to a report in the Shanghai Evening Post.
The most seriously injured patient, who has burns over 99 percent of his body, has been put on a ventilator, said Fang Yong, director of Shanghai No. 3 People's Hospital.
"We have adopted an anti-infection treatment for him," said Fang, who is also a burn and trauma specialist. "However, we aren't optimistic about his recovery."
The five other workers who remain in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) have suffered burns over 20 percent to 30 percent of their bodies, the hospital said in a press release. They have passed through the shock stage of being burned and are now being closely monitored.
The hospital has not allowed relatives to visit the injured workers, whose burns make them especially susceptible to infection.
One of the injured workers at Changhai Hospital was transferred out of the ICU Wednesday, said Zhu Shihui, the deputy director of the Burn and Trauma Department. The 26-year-old's family has since been allowed to visit him.
Zhu expects that the hospital will soon be able to transfer the other worker out of the ICU as well.
Of the 13 workers injured in the accident, seven were in stable condition Wednesday.
Baosteel Group, one of the country's largest steel companies, said on its website Wednesday that all of its plants began Tuesday to inspect equipment for safety problems. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
