Ilao's 3 goals lift Cougars
The Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars easily overpowered the Harvest Christian Academy Eagles, improving their record to 5-2-0 last night at the George Washington High School field in Mangilao.
The Eagles dropped to 2-4-1 with their 7-1 loss to the Cougars in an Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Girls' Soccer League game.
Gemilie Ilao led the Cougars with a hat trick, and got help from Andrea Odell, who scored two goals. Olivia Votaw and Morgan Quinley helped with a goal each.
Elisha Benavente scored the lone goal for Harvest.
As for the win, AOLG athletic director Vic Santiago had two words that explained it all: "Well prepared."
Ross Awa, the Cougars' assistant coach, added that his girls communicated very well on the field. And they were playing "to win as a team."
In the first half, the Cougars dominated the field behind Ilao and Odell, who alternated in scoring two goals apiece beginning at the 14th minute and ending at the 38th.
At the half, however, Eagles' head coach Bryce Pegram tried to motivate his girls to wake up. But, he added, the Cougars "still stuck it to us."
Votaw opened the second half with a point-blank kick in the goalie's box after the ball bounced off the leg of the Eagles' goalie during a save.
Minutes later, Benavente scored for the Eagles. But Ilao answered right back with a goal of her own.
At the 65th minute, however, Quinley scored the final goal with a header off of a corner kick.
During the game, two players -- an Eagle and Cougars goalie Dionne Hernandez -- were hit in the head fairly hard with a kicked ball. The Eagle, Phoebe Minato, was having blurred vision and had to be taken to the clinic in the middle of the game.
Hernandez, on the other hand, just walked off the field with a damaged contact lens.
Later in the evening, Minato's mother, Linda Minato, who had taken her daughter to the clinic, said they got some medication but will have to go back in the morning to see an eye specialist.
"Tomorrow morning," Linda Minato said, "because no one was available. We're just going to be icing it when we get home."
The mother added that her daughter was complaining of a headache.
"Right now, we don't know (if everything is OK). And we won't know until tomorrow," she added.

Guam's under-14 boys' national soccer team encountered a rocky start to the 2012 Asian Football Confederation Festival of Football in Beijing, China, but ended day one of competition on a positive note with a 2-0 win over the Northern Mariana Islands.
Earlier in the day, Guam lost to Hong Kong 2-0 and then swallowed a tough 1-0 loss to Mongolia.
"It was hard to move around and make good passes," said Guam's Napu Topasna about the Hong Kong team. "Their defense was good -- they were always on us, making it hard to turn. Based on how we did during that game, we knew we had to work on team movement.
"Our passing game was better in the later match against NMI. We won, but we still could have finished more goals," added Topasna, who played for the Southern Cobras during the Cars Plus Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League.
Topasna scored Guam's first goal in this year's festival after accurately lobbing the ball over NMI's goalkeeper and into the goal. Moments later, Leon Bamba added an insurance goal for Guam to secure the win against NMI.
Earlier in the day, Guam played an aggressive game against Mongolia that saw both teams take a penalty kick each on different infractions. Guam earned the first one-on-one after a Mongolian defender was issued a yellow card for intentionally holding Guam's Jake Benito to prevent him from shooting the ball near the goal. Joshua Lujan took the penalty kick, but his shot unluckily sailed over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. Minutes later, Mongolia was awarded a penalty kick after an infraction was called on Guam. Mongolia's kicker sent the ball just out of Guam goalkeeper Jerome Artero's reach and into the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Like Guam, NMI finished day one of competition winning one game and dropping two, including the game against Guam. NMI's other loss was 2-0 against DPR Korea. Before facing Guam in the late afternoon game, NMI earned a 2-0 win over Chinese Taipei.
