NATO Visit to Mongolia Heralds A New Global Role
NATO’s Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy of Alliance, James Appathurai, and his delegates visited Mongolia for the first time ever at the invitation of the Mongolian Defence Minister, Luvsanvandan Bold on 26-27 May.
Appathurai and the delegates were welcomed by the Foreign Minister of Mongolia Zandanshatar and exchanged opinions over the Mongolian-NATO relationship and the possibilities of further cooperation.
On May 26th, the Deputy Assistant called on the Mongolian President Ts.Elbegdorj.
The president expressed his pleasure over Mr. Appathurai’s visit to Mongolia and conveyed his thoughts relating to the interdependent development with NATO in terms of foreign policy concerning peace, stability, democracy and their common values.
Moreover, he indicated his interest in becoming a collaborating country, drafting an independent project within the framework of a NATO project which encourages partnership with all countries.
They also exchanged the views on future cooperation.
Appathurai highlighted the Mongolian contribution to the work of the broader international coalition in Afghanistan. Mongolia recently became the 45th nation to contribute troops to the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan.
“The main purpose of our visit was to express thanks and appreciation to the Mongolian soldiers in Afghanistan,” said Appathurai. “Mongolia is making an important contribution to the work of the broader international coalition in Afghanistan and it is important to recognize and honor their service.”
The NATO official also mentioned that he came to Mongolia first and foremost to implement the NATO project in order to collaborate with the all world countries and to improve relations and cooperation with Mongolia and bring it to a new level.
