Is This Korean Owned Mongolian Land?
Korea’s Industry & Technology Times have reported on its website that Korea purchased 30,000 hectares of land in Khalkhgol Soum in the eastern province of Dornod.
It said that the Korea Mongolia Agricultural Development Initiatives of the Republic of Korea had an agreement with Dornod Province administration to purchase the plot of land.
They aimed to carry out eco-friendly agriculture and livestock breeding by building a Kory Plantation (Derived from the ‘Koryo’ Dynasty of ancient Korea) as a part of the Special Economic Agricultural Zone in the Khalkhgol.
The IT Times stressed that the project must contribute in the long run to the development of this plantation into an overseas food base for Korea and will bring about the procurement of subterranean resources as well as provide grain and vegetable import alternatives.
South Korea is 96% dependent on imports for grains other than rice.
This raises suspicions that Mongolian authorities have begun to sell our land under the name of leasing.
We Have Not Sold A Piece of Land to Foreigners
The Dornod Province Governor Ts.Janlav could not be reached on the telephone to clarify this information. However, we have a few details from Mr. Khurelbaatar, the speaker of the province’s parliament.
“The Agriculture Ministry of Mongolia alongside the KOICA is implementing a project to build a model farm on 200 hectares of land in Khalkhgol Soum” he said.
“The press is providing false information about this project. The $4 million US project which will last 12 months was launched this year.
As part of the project, Korea will help us build chicken, pig and cow farms, build a fodder plant and continue harvesting. We have not sold a piece of land to foreigners.
For the time being, I have not received any information about selling the land,” he concluded.
