China builds highway into Tavan Tolgoi

It is reported that construction of a new highway linking Ganqimaodao border crossing in Inner Mongolia with Tavan Tolgoi in South Gobi is in progress aimed to further boost coal imports.

According to Inner Mongolia's local officials, Chinese importers have funded the RMB59m project, which kicked off construction on April 15th 2011, though specific time schedule is not released.

A JV was also formed by Chinese importers and Mongolia's ER Company to be responsible for construction and maintenance. The 246 kilometers long trucking distance is repeatedly hindered by accidents.

It is expected that imports via Ganqimaodao may hit 12 million tonnes to 15 million tonnes in 2011, up from 7.71 million tonnes in 2010. Q1 imports were 1.63 million tonnes, up by 132%.
