UAE men hold Mongolia

DUBAI — UAE men’s team had an exciting draw against Mongolia in the second round of the 40th World Chess Olympiad held at Istanbul Expo Centre, Istanbul, Turkey. With two draws on the lower boards, it was Grandmaster Salem A.R. Saleh who scored the equalising victory against IM Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa.

In the second board match Noaman Omar of UAE lost to GM Tsegmed Batchuluun rated 2493 in a Catalan opening. He sacrificed a pawn for counter play but with deft defensive play, the Grandmaster forced the exchange of minor pieces with his active king and pocketed the point.

Qatar nipped back a full point when Grandmaster Mohamad Al Modiahki upset top seeded GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine. Ivanchuk was slightly better with black but he carelessly allowed the enemy queen to sneak into the back rank. Ivanchuk immediately resigned, declining attempts to seek compensation for the piece. Ukraine defeated Qatar 3-1.

The United States defaeted Lithuania by 3.5-0.5. GM Hikaru Nakamura of USA played a prolonged battle lasting 107 moves against GM Vidmantas Malisauskas. Nakumura showed his class in this marathon game.

Azerbaijan easily defeated Ireland 3.5- 0.5.

The Mayor of Bayrampaþa Atila Aydýner today made the symbolic opening move today on the first board and thus gave the start to an exciting Olympiad U-16. France and India defeated Peru and Turkey 2016 respectively, by a 3-1 score. Poland cleanly swept Costa Rica 4-0, while China took 3.5 points against Italy. 

Russia had two quick draws against Greece, but they continued pushing with the white pieces on the remaining two boards. Both Grischuk and Jakovenko were successful and Russia finished the day with a 3-1 victory.
