IN'L SEMINAR ON EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY BEGINS
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ An international seminar on the education for democracy kicked off on Monday in Ulaanbaatar city.
This is one of the measures taken by Mongolia, who is chairing the Community of Democracies (CD), within the five priorities for the CD's actions. An initiative on organizing this seminar has been made by the President Ts.Elbegdorj during a visit of the UNESCO Director-General to Mongolia.
The seminar has brought together 20 governmental representatives and experts and scholars from foreign countries and about 50 representatives of Mongolia's government.
Messages were delivered from the Initiative Group on education for democracy and from Dr Qian Tang, the Assistant Director-General of the UNESCO for Education. Opening remarks were made by B.Undarmaa, the Vice Minister of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia, and by B.Batkhishig, the State Secretary of Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The key report was given by Mr. Roland Rich, the Executive Director of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). He underlined that the seminat is a well-timed measure of Mongolia in times of chairing the CD. “Democracy is a long-time process, so education, particularly the education for democracy, is able to ensure a strengthening of the democracy,” he said.
Main objectives of the seminar are to clarify importance of the democratic values and ideology and their realization, and to deepen the understanding and agreements on the education for democracy, to determine challenges in the democratic process, its positive factors, to highlight a process of democratic development in transitional countries and in conflicted regions, and to release a recommendation on reflecting the democratic education policy in training programs.
The participants will release a declaration on the education quality in democratic countries and a policy document determining frames of the democratic education. A book on various experiences in democratic education will be published as well.
On Tuesday, the President Ts.Elbegdorj received the seminar's participants.
