Agricultural minister about third campaign results

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry T.Badamjunai gave a report at Wednesday's cabinet meeting on results of the Third campaign for reclaiming virgin lands.

As statistics show, Mongolia harvested 75 thousand tons of wheat in 2005, and 130 thousand tons--in 2006. In 2007, wheat harvest declined by 16 thousand tons. Thanks to realizing the Third campaign, Mongolia harvested one million tons of wheat in the years 2008-2010, and thus satisfied a condition to fully provide its population with wheat. Mongolia could also reserve potatoes that are to provide the population by 100 per cent. This year, only 60 percent of demand in vegs will be covered this year, the Minister has added.

He has told the Premier that quality of wheat as well as of its gluten has improved. In response, the Premier has underlined that providing people with wheat and potatoes is a nice opportunity to ensure the food safety. He has added that the land farming sector, like the mining, might become main source of export products.
The Premier has congratulated all those working in the agricultural sector and farming on good outcome of the campaign and wished them a success.
