DAYS OF MNOC, IOC AND FAREWELL CEREMONY TAKE PLACE ‎

On Saturday, the Day of Mongolian Athletes and the Day of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were celebrated together with a farewell ceremony of Mongolian athletes to participate in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The celebration started by laying a wreath to the Monument of D.Sukhbaatar on the Sukhbaatar square, and then the State Head Ts.Elbegdorj addressed the Olympic athletes and wished them success.

He handed the state flag to M.Enkhbold, the Deputy Premier and chairman of the National Olympic team of Mongolia. Then, he transferred the flag to a State Honored Sportsman and long-distance runner B.Ser-Od.

During the ceremony, the president of the Mongolian National Olympic Committee (MonNOC) D.Zagdsuren delivered a message of the IOC president Jacques Rogge. After this, athletes’ oaths were given by M.Bundmaa, a State Honored Sportswoman and member of the national selected team for judo; and P.Serdamba, a Hero of Labor and World champion for boxing.

Within the ceremony, open days of the physical culture and sports departments of the city’s districts and sports federation took place on the Sukhbaatar square.

The Olympic Day Run is an international Olympic Movement activity promoting mass participation of sports held in June organized by National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formally established on 23 June 1894 through the efforts of Pierre de Coubertin promoting competitive sport as a revival of the ancient Olympic Games.

Due to World War II, Olympic Games had not been held in either 1940 or 1944. The city of London rose to host to the Games of the XIV after World War II. In January 1948, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the idea of Olympic Day to commemorate the creation of the IOC on 23 June 1894 in Paris, a sort of “birthday” of the Olympic Movement at the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz, Switzerland.

Olympic Day was held for the first time on 23 June with a total of nine National Olympic Committees (NOCs) hosting ceremonies in their respective countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Mongolia joined the IOC in 1962 and firstly participated in the Olympics in 1964. Mongolia has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. Mongolia joined the Olympic Council of Asia in 1956.

The national team of Mongolia has competed in events of judo, wrestling, boxing, shooting, archery, gymnastics, cycling, weightlifting, swimming, speed skating and skiing, and grabbed two gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals at the Summer Games. Mongolia also has won a gold medal from the Summer Paralympic Games and two gold medals from the Summer Youth Games.

Mongolia will be represented at the London 2012 Olympics by 29 athletes. They will compete in judo, boxing, freestyle wrestling, athletics, shooting, archery and swimming.
