Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg Travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Japan

Deputy Secretary James B. Steinberg will travel to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Japan July 16-22. This is Deputy Secretary Steinberg’s first visit to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mongolia as Deputy Secretary.

Deputy Secretary Steinberg will attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Informal Ministerial and meet with Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev and civil society leaders in Almaty, Kazakhstan July 16-17.

In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Deputy Secretary Steinberg will meet with President Islom Karimov, Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov and civil society leaders July 17-18.

In Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Deputy Secretary Steinberg will meet with the Interim Government and civil society leaders, and visit Manas Transit Center July 18.

On July 19, Deputy Secretary Steinberg will arrive in Ulaanbaatar to meet with senior Mongolian officials, including with President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj and Prime Minister Sükhbaataryn Batbold, as well as with members of civil society.

In Tokyo July 20-21, Deputy Secretary Steinberg will meet with senior Japanese officials. He will also lead the U.S. delegation in the Trilateral Strategic Dialogue with his Australian and Japanese counterparts.
