Mongolia to liaise with India to develop mining, infra
June 23 (PTI) -- Mongolia that possesses some of the world's largest mineral resources like copper, gold, uranium and coal, wants to partner with India to develop its mines and infrastructure sector, a top Mines ministry official said today.
"Mongolian Prime Minister Batbold S has invited India for joint ventures in mineral-based value addition projects and associated infrastructure development as the country has vast unexplored mineral deposits," Mines Secretary Santha Sheela Nair told PTI.
Besides joint ventures in mining minerals, the Mongolian government wants India to fund infrastructure projects around its mines including rail and road projects to connect ports, Nair said.
Gold-testing is another area where India can share its expertise with Mangolia. "We are also examining possibilities for tie-up in gold testing as Mongolia has huge gold reserves and looking for testing facilities, " Nair said.
Some of the world's major mining corporations including Australian firm Rio Tinto, Canada's Ivanhoe, South Africa based AngloGold as well as firms from China, Russia, Korea are already running large-scale mining operations in the country.
However, Mongolia is now looking for partners for 17 state-owned mineral reserves where it wants to offer up to 49 per cent stake to foreign partners. India is exploring possibilities of equity mining in Mongolia.
Nair, who had led a high-level delegation to Mongolia this month, said the government was considering formation of a consortium of Indian companies from the public and private sector, to seek mining and mineral concessions from Mongolian authorities for exploration and development.
The Indian Bureau of Mines and its Mongolian counterpart are looking for cooperation in the areas of mineral processing, laboratory scale studies and training, information sharing and computerised ore body modelling, Nair said.
Technical cooperation between the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Mongolian agencies in the areas of training, satellite based mapping, targeted surveys and studies is another area of interest.
Another senior official informed that Dr V Krishnamurthy Committee, appointed by the prime minister to evolve a policy on raw material acquisitions in foreign countries, was soon to come up with its recommendations on acquisitions in countries including Mongolia, Namibia, Congo.
