Foreign Minister G. Zandanshatar: Mongolia will launch uranium cooperation with Kazakhstan
Foreign Minister G. Zandanshatar took part in ministerial meeting as a part of 3rd Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), which was held in Istanbul, Turkey and also closed significant negotiation for Mongolia.
Q: What did Mongolia accomplish from the 3rd Summit of CICA?
G.Zandanshatar: Mongolia made its stance clear and had two important provisions added. Mongolia has been making continuous effort to affirm its status as nuclear free nation and has been taking actions to get other nations’ acknowledgement. Having other nations’ acknowledge Mongolia’s status is important as it provides better national security and basis for non-proliferation of nuclear arms in Mongolia. Also, there are many countries that are landlocked like Mongolia.
Therefore, Mongolian delegation proposed to establish a research center for landlocked developing countries similar to Mongolia. The delegates of many nations supported our proposal and therefore, soon the research center will open its door in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia.
Q: It was reported that you had unofficial meeting with foreign ministers of a few countries. Can you tell us a little bit about your unofficial meetings?
G.Zandanshatar: I met with Kanat Saudabaev, Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, to address transit shipping for landlocked countries and exchanged our ideas. I am confident that we will be able to come to fruitful solutions with regards to transit shipping for landlocked countries including Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Also, Kazakhstan is a leading uranium exporter in the world. We agreed to establish cooperation with regards to uranium development. The bilateral governmental commission will soon be established to address such issues as transit shipping, mining and food security.
