MINISTER OF SOCIAL WELFARE MEETS IOM DIRECTOR-GENERAL

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The Minister of Social Welfare and Labor T.Gandi met on Tuesday, September 6 Mr. William Lacy Swing, the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Mr. Swing has arrived here to attend an opening ceremony of the IOM Permanent Representative Office in UB and to participate in the 10th meeting of the authorities of immigration administrations of the ASEM members. The Minister said that the government of Mongolia appreciates the IOM's worldwide works within its policy for developing humanitarian and systematic management on migration, tackling socio-economic problems related to immigration and migration and carrying out activities of strengthening national capabilities.

Mongolia joined the IOM in June of 2008 as the 123rd member, and a cooperation memorandum between the government of Mongolia and the IOM was established in November of 2010. A program on creating a capability of migration management in Mongolia is being implemented in accordance with the memorandum. In frames of the program, the IOM and Mongolia have collaborated in recalling some 2,000 Mongolian living in the Czech Republic and supporting them. The Minister and the IOM Director-General shared views on co-implementing same purpose programs for those Mongolians living in the Republic of Korea, the USA and Poland and cooperating in reducing negative effects caused by the migration by improving external and internal migration management. T.Gandi expressed a willingness to cooperate with other countries in creating bilateral regulations on protecting legal interests of citizens, to study international experience on employment abroad and to take assistance from the IOM for strengthening capability. Mr. Swing said the IOM is possible to closely cooperate with Mongolia in above matters through the Permanent Representative.
