Philly scientist awarded for climate change study
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A scientist at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia is recipient of a prestigious award for his research on climate change in Mongolia.
Dr. Clyde Goulden received that country's highest award to foreigners — the Order of the Polar Star — on Wednesday at a ceremony in Washington D.C.
Previous recipients of the award include former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. John McCain.
Mongolia's climate is changing faster than many other places on earth. Rising temperatures are drying up rivers and streams and stunting grass growth, which hurts the country's nomadic herders.
Goulden first visited Mongolia in 1994. Officials say in addition to his scientific research, Goulden has worked for many years to train Mongolian scientists who are now crucial to their country's environmental research.
