Wildlife conference opens in Ulaanbaatar

The Mongolian office of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, formerly the World Wildlife Foundation) is holding a conference about the impact that building projects can have on wildlife. Called “Negative Impact of Infrastructure Development on Wildlife Migration and Ways to Eliminate It,” the conference will be held on Friday at the Ulaanbaatar Hotel.

Representatives of the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism, the President’s Office, Auto Road Office, state-owned Railway LLC, Mongolian Science Academy, National Association of Mining, Oyutolgoi LLC, and Energy Resource LLC will take part in the conference.

Infrastructure development is a crucial issue for Mongolia’s mining sector, and many new roads and railways are planned in connection with the Oyutolgoi and Tavantolgoi mines.

Such projects have the potential to interfere with the migratory patterns of certain animals in those areas, including khulan and gazelle. Those attending the conference will discuss ways to mitigate those impacts, and issue recommendations.
