Topsoe's TREMP(TM) Methanation Technology in Coke Oven Gas Comprehensive Implementation Receives Re-affirmation

BEIJING, May 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Recently, Topsoe gained two COG (Coke Oven Gas)-SNG (Substitute Natural Gas)-LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) contracts. On February 6th, 2014, Topsoe signed technology transfer contract with Inner Mongolia San Ju TREMP(TM) Jia Jing New Energy Ltd.. This contract will apply Topsoe’s exclusive process technology TREMP(TM) (cycle energy-saving mathanation). The transfer contract will include licensing, process package, heat recovery system detail design, catalyst, engineering technology service, training etc. The plant will have a capacity of 57,810NM3/h COG. On April 25th, 2014, Topsoe signed technology transfer contract with Shan Xi Dao Sheng Xin Yu Clean Energy Ltd.. The transfer contract will include licensing, process package, heat recovery system detail design, catalyst, engineering technology service, training etc. The plant will have a capacity of 27,500Nm3/h COG.

These two projects will utilize the coke oven gas which is the secondary product of coking unit as the raw material to produce final product, i.e., LNG through the processes of compression, preliminary cleaning, fine desulfurization, methanation and liquefaction. In the above processes, methanation is the most important step among the whole production procedures, because the yield of methanation will directly determine the quality and quantity of the final product.

The inclusion of Topsoe’s process will transfer excessive CO, CO2 and other traces of carbonaceous matters into methane, which is equivalent to an increase of LNG production by 90%, and this will add considerable value to the project and increase utilization of the “waste” gas.

Topsoe’s strength in COG to SNG is that it replaces compressor by ejector. The high on-line and high stability of the static equipment will ensure the overall long period stability of the equipment. Except for the stability, the costs of the equipment and operation are far lower than the compressor. The introduction of the ejector into the methane process has become Topsoe’s patent.

With more than 70 years’ experience in catalytic field, Topsoe thoroughly considers the impurities and high hydrocarbon in COG that impact the catalysts. Therefore, Topsoe will tailor-make and select high-active and high-stable catalyst for the owners when considering economy to optimize dosage.

Up to now, Topsoe has successfully transferred 9 plants, which include 3 coal gas plants and 6 COG-LNG plants. Out of which, the Xinjiang Qinghua coal gas project with 5.5billion m3 annual production is currently the largest single-train SNG plant in the world. The China National Gas Corporation Limited (CNGC) COG-SNG plant in Wuhai is currently the largest plant for production of SNG from COG.
