Mongolian peacekeeper died in Sudan
A Mongolian peacekeeper, first sergeant of the Mongolian army, G.Munkh-Erdene, who was serving in the Mongolian first round of the peacekeeping component in South Sudan died because of a health problem on 13th November. First sergeant G.Munkh-Erdene was serving in the first round battalion under the UN mandate to support peacekeeping mission as a driver for the transport division.
N.Bayarmagnai, deputy chief of staff in the Armed Forces spoke to our journalist.
-Reports say that a Mongolian peacekeeper died in South Sudan. Can you give us an official report on the case, or a medical analysis?
-Witnesses say that first sergeant G.Munkh-Erdene had epilepsy and fell down while he was serving in Juba in South Sudan at around 03.30 on 13th November. The medical team gave first aid and delivered him to a hospital in Cambodia. G.Munkh-Erdene died of a stroke at 04.00. The autopsy result says that a heart attack was the cause of death. His body was delivered via a Turkish Airline flight from Istanbul last Saturday. He will be buried in the place where he was born on his family’s request.
-Army staffs are supposed to have thorough medical checks before and after active duty. Does he have any illness?
-Every peacekeeper has free medical checks. G.Munkh-Erdene did not have any health problems when he was sent to South Sudan.
-Where was he serving before he was sent to South Sudan?
-He had served in the Mongolian Armed Forces for 12 years. He was working in 123rd military unit in Khovd before he was sent on the peacekeeping mission to South Sudan. He also completed missions in Sierra-Leon in 2006 and 2009 when the Mongolian army II and VIII round battalions successfully completed peacekeeping missions. He was awarded UN Peace medals I and II and the “For the mother land III” honored medal.
-A Peacekeeper`s death causes concern among the people. Have there been any incidents like this before?
-There was no such incident before. Every peacekeeper has medical checks. But a Mongolian peacekeeper arrived back home because of a sudden heart muscle tremor. He is in good health after an operation.
