Premier addresses economic forum of Mongolia
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The Prime Minister S.Batbold delivered a speech at an opening of a special meeting themed “Transparency of Extractive Industry” started Thursday. He has emphasized an importance of transparency of activities of the mineral sector.
This goal to put the strategic and biggest mineral deposits into economic circulation to create a financial accumulation, distribute benefits to people from the mineral resources, make the mineral sector the biggest field of Mongolian development.
The Premier has said the government indends to involve independent members in the representative leading councils of the biggest state-owned companies such as “Tavan tolgoi” company and “Oyu tolgoi” LLC in order to ensure the sector's transparency. As Batbold considers, the independent members may contribute to controlling over activities of the companies and ensuring the transparency.
S.Batbold has underlined the government of Mongolia is paying a special attention to developing the responsible mining, and expressed a hope that this meeting would create good proposals and initiatives on making transparent the information that goes to people. Saying there are 33 countries that have agreed to ensure all requirements of the initiative of transparency of extractive industry, S.Batbold has highlighted Mongolia's becoming the fourth one to join the initiative in October previous year.
The two-day special meeting is co-organized by the government of Mongolia, the Presidential Office and the World Economic Forum (WEF) with participation of representatives of international and domestic companies, NGOs and developmental agencies. The participants have discussed ways of strengthening and refining upon the transparency and governance of the extractive industry.
