MARCO POLO'S MONUMENT ERECTED

A ceremony took place on Friday to inaugurate the monument to Marco Polo, an envoy for Khubilai Khaan.

It has been created in front of the Central Tower, Ulaanbaatar.

“The monument is dedicated to one of the distinguished people who launched the world’s globalization and advertized the Mongolian Empire’s history and culture,” said S.Bayar MP at the ceremony. The UB city general manager Ch.Bat underlined that Marco Polo witnessed a development of the diplomatic service of Mongolia and respectful attitude to foreign envoys. “Ulaanbaatar is becoming an international city, so we are erecting monuments not only for Mongolians, but also for foreigners who contributed to Mongolia,” he added. Marco Polo, a merchant, arrived in the Mongolian territory for the first time following his father and uncle. He has served for Khubilai Khaan for many years, during the Yuan Empire and conveyed letters from Khubilai Khaan to Pope of Rome and from Pope to Khubilai. The monument has been designed by B.Denzen.
