NGO plans to support women candidates

The NGO Globe International is implementing a program to support women candidates in Mongolia’s 2012 parliamentary election. The NGO is receiving assistance from the Asia Foundation.

Globe International is preparing women to run for office by training them in how to deal with the press and informing them of their rights and responsibilities. Other NGO’s involved in women’s issues, political parties, and civil society organizations are also involved in the program.

Kh.Naranjargal of Globe International and T.Undariya Monfemnet National Network noted that a women’s quota should not be necessary, saying as many as 100 percent of the candidates could be women. They said a women’s quota reveals gender inequality in politics.

The officials cited research that finds most voters are willing to vote for women candidates. They said that means citizens are ready to elect women to be their representatives.
