Livestock count underway

The state is counting livestock from December 9 to 20. The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry and the National Statistics Committee are organizing the count.

The results of the count will be announced on December 25.

Mongolia annually counts animals in December after winter meat preparation. Commissions in the soums will count livestock and pets, as well as pigs, bees, poultry, and reindeer.

The results yield data needed for setting and implementing policies regarding animal husbandry and animal products. Animal husbandry is one of Mongolia’s most important economic sectors.

In 2010, Mongolia had 32.7 million head of livestock. The ministry predicts that number will increase to 40 million this year due to good summer weather.
