Siblings take on Mongol Rally in old Morris Minor
Taking part in the Mongol Rally is no mean feat but tackling the 10,000-mile challenge in a clapped out motor sounds almost impossible.
That’s the challenge brother and sister Rachel and Andrew Lovett from Solihull will accept when they take part in next month’s event in a 60-year-old Morris Minor 1000.
The Mongol Rally is a charity fundraiser which sets off from London’s Battersea Park.
Entrants have four to six weeks to make their way to Mongolia via their chosen route. Drivers are encouraged to use a vehicle with an engine of 1000cc or less and a value of no more than £2,000.
Andrew, 26, will be responsible for coaxing the car from London, through Europe, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Russia before reaching Mongolia.
Rachel, 22, chose a 1954 ‘split-screen’ Moggie in weathered black, with red oxide and grey primer and an unknown mileage.
She hopes to raise £2,500 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
“This is the journey of a lifetime and we are both so very excited and nervous. The Mongol Rally organisers love my car so much they have used it in preview literature to promote the event,” she said.
Work is now being carried out on the Minor to ensure it is fit for the marathon.
It will be fitted with heavy duty tyres, sports seats and harnesses.
Rachel, who works at the Midland Automobile Club, is still looking for a co-driver to take the route back home with her.
Andrew, who works at Listers Audi in Solihull, has to fly home after four weeks to get back to work.
“Otherwise my parents and friends have volunteered to fly out and join me,” she added.
