Ulaanbaatar Anniversary to be Marked as Citizens’ Holiday

The 373rd Anniversary of the establishment of Ulaanbaatar City will be on October 29, 2012. The anniversary is undoubtedly a holiday of Ulaanbaatar residents. Our first capital city was established near Shireet Tsagaan Lake near the foot of Ikh Mongol Mountain in Burd Soum of Uvurkhangai Province in 1639, at that time, the city’s name was Shar Bos City. The capital city of Mongolia has changed its location 28 times and its name five times since 1639.

Finally, Ulaanbaatar became our capital city, founded in its current location which lies among four enormous mountains in 1778. The city was named ‘Niislel Khuree’ until 1924. However, the First Regular Meeting of State passed the original Consitution of Mongolia and changed the name of capital city to ‘Ulaanbaatar’.

The anniversary of Ulaanbaatar was celebrated until 1994 when the citizens of Ulaanbaatar celebrated the 355th Anniversary of the Capital City. Since then, in accordance with the Decree of Mongolian Government, the anniversary was only observed in 1999 and 2004. But the new administration of our capital city has announced that October 29 will be marked as the Ulaanbaatar Citizens’ Holiday from this year.

The working group to organize the holiday program has been created. The leader of the group is Ts.Baatarkhuu, the Deputy in Charge of Social Development Policy of the Ulaanbaatar Governor’s Office. 

He claimed, “We have initiated numerous activities which involves the public. Various competitions started also. Namely, ‘Smiling Ulaanbaatar’ – the social advertisements competition among all studios, productions and artists, ‘I Love Ulaanbaatar’- the Short Film Festival prepared with smart phones, ‘How can we contribute to our city?’- A Speech Competition started on October 25, while ‘Ikh Nuudel’ Chess Championship for General Education Schools Pupils under the auspices of the Ulaanbaatar City Governor is set to start today. For the celebration, a Children’s Choir comprised of 1,300 children will perform at the Central Cultural Palace also.

The Ulaanbaatar Representative’s Office is receiving the proposals from citizens on what events to hold for the celebration of the anniversary for five days. Furthermore, ‘Ulaanbaatar’s Listening’ Information Centre has started to receive proposals from citizens on how to develop our city. In addition, citizens are able to submit petitions and complaints regarding the performance of Administration Offices of Khoroos and Districts as well as disseminate information from the centre.
