Is Starbucks about to come to Mongolia?

Ulaanbaatar is abuuz with the excitement of the news that Starbucks might be coming to Mongolia.

It seems that the MCS company of Mongolia has recently purchased the right to open five new Starbucks coffee shops in Ulaanbaatar.

The shops are set to open during summer 2011 and will be spread across a number of locations within the city center. It is almost certain that one will open in the Central Tower as it is owned by MCS itself. Further locations are likely to be found near the Shangri-La hotel construction site, by the State Department Store as well as near Sukhbaatar Square and maybe the Art Kino.

Of course, Starbucks wouldn’t be the first international chain of coffee shops to set up in UB, Ti-Amo has been implanted in UB for the past few years and now has 4 locations in town. Further to this, UB is of course filled with excellent coffee houses and bakeries to keep us busy at the moment.

The Ulaanbaatar expat and Mongolian community is awaiting with baited breath further news of the arrival of Starbucks as well as the locations of the coffee shops within the city center. The excitement is based around the perception that opening Starbucks in Ulaanbaatar will serve as a signal that Mongolia is finally attracting the global multinational brands and that the Mongolian market is being taken seriously.

Of course, it could all be nonsense and it could be that there are actually no plans for Starbucks to open in UB, we will just have to wait and see.
