101 more kindergartens to join strike

Some kindergarten teachers went on strike in Ulaanbaatar on Monday morning, closing four kindergartens in the Bayanzurkh district and one in the Khan-Uul district. Now another 101 kindergartens have announced plans to strike on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the kindergartens were operating normally.

Secondary school teachers also plan to strike for two hours on Wednesday. Representatives of the teachers will meet with Education, Culture and Science Minister Yo.Otgonbayar on December 1.

The teachers say that if the meeting with the minister yields no results, they will go on strike next week. The teachers are demanding salary increases beginning on January and not later in the year, as currently proposed in the 2012 budget.

Altogether some 73,000 teachers work in Mongolia, 44,000 of whom are school teachers, 13,000 institute and university teachers, and 16,000 kindergarten teachers.
