U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia Visit Troops

KABUL, Afghanistan -- United States Ambassador to Mongolia Jonathan Addleton visited a small contingent of Mongolian counterinsurgency trainers deployed to Camp Julien, here March 22.

Ambassador Addleton paid a visit to express his thanks and gratitude to the Mongolians deployed for their contributions to NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan as they prepare to redeploy back to their home stations.

According to coalition officials, although the Mongolian troop numbers on Camp Julien were low, 11 trainers, in comparison to other partner nations such as the U.S., UK and Canada, their contributions will have an ever-lasting impression on the Afghanistan National Army personnel they have trained as well as their coalition counterparts.

“The Mongolians are a prideful, resourceful, and jovial group,” said U.S. Army Maj. Scott Monson a liaison officer from the Alaska National Guard. “They take their job and responsibilities seriously but also know how to have a good time. We will miss the enthusiasm and passion they displayed during their tour here.”

The Mongolians took little time before they began making their presence known upon arriving at Camp Julien. They took an aggressive approach to their training lanes as evident in their ability to quickly train the ANA instructors to a level of expertise comparable to their own.

“The Mongolians came in with some very high standards and strived throughout their tour to exceed the expectation and have honestly been quite successful,” said UK Capt. John Minis, the lead supervisor of all coalition trainers at Camp Julien. “I have visited a few of their training lessons and they are all over it. They have been able to get the ANA instructors to adjust fire and train the new ANA recruits autonomously.”

The Mongolian counterinsurgency training team not only received words of praise but was each awarded the NATO Service Medal for their efforts.

“This brings pride and honor to the Mongolian military,” said Ambassador Addleton. “Wherever they go, no matter the task it is with certainty that they will perform with excellence. I want to commend the Mongolian military for taking on the challenge, not only here in Afghanistan but throughout the various United Nations missions they have contributed to in places like Darfur, Chad, Sierra Leon and Kosovo.”

Although this group of Mongolian trainers is closing the book on their tour, they will be replaced by another enthusiastic group of Mongolians who undoubtedly will bring the same passions and drive to the NTM-A training for some time in the future.
