Peking to Paris’ rally takes a break in Ulaanbaatar
Their arrival in Ulaanbaatar coincided with Children’s Day and the old vintage cars including a Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet, Porsche, as well as Moskvich attracted a huge number of people as they pulled over on the road next to Sukhbaatar Square. During their stay in Ulaanbaatar, the rally crews had some repairing to do with their cars and took some rest. The oldest of the cars dates as far back as 1917 and none of the cars participating in the rally are no longer being manufactured.
The “Peking to Paris” classic car rally first started in 1907 and covers more than 12,000 kilometers across the toughest and most unusual routes including through the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and on Russian back roads to Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland, and, eventually, France. The rally is organized every three years by the Endurance Rally Association.
This year, a total of 99 cars set off from the Great Wall of China in Beijing on the morning of May 28. However upon leaving Mongolia, several of them were forced to be shipped home due to mechanical problems.
The cars will be racing in different time trial events from location to location en route to their final destination. They are competing in four categories; vintage cars (1920 to 1931 type cars), vintageant cars (1932 to 1941), classic cars with an engine size of up to two liters (1942 to 1975), and classic cars with over two liters (1942 to 1975).
The rally set off to the Russian border through the Gobi Desert on Monday morning.
