Conference looks at environmental impact of closed mines
A conference on the environmental impact of closed mines was held August 31 to September 3 at the Erdenet factory.
The event was organized by the State Specialized Inspection Agency and a German environmental organization.
About 250 representatives of mining companies, mine inspectors, and environmental groups took part. They discussed mine closures and the best ways to reclaim and restore land that has been mined. One report says 14,500 hectares of land in Mongolia have been left damaged after mining operations have ceased.
The delegates proposed measures to minimize the impact of closed mines on the environment, including legislation and monitoring. They also proposed that funding for dealing with closed mines be increased, and that technologies be explored to, for example, address the issue of rivers whose courses are changed by mining operations. The recommendations are being sent to the Government.
