Tavantolgoi mining companies to plant trees in Gobi

Officials in Tsogttsetsii soum of Umnugobi aimag say two Tavantolgoi mining companies, Energy Resources LLC and Tavantolgoi LLC, are planning to plant trees on 15 hectares in the soum, and that five hectares have already been planted. The companies are also planning to plant vegetables to increase local residents’ food supplies.

Some households in the soum plant trees and vegetables, but watering them is difficult because well water is at least 80 meters below ground. That is why most residents of the soum buy vegetables from the aimag center. Herders who lost their animals during last winter’s dzud are also interested in planting vegetables.
