Mongolian Christians celebrate 20th anniversary of its official registration in Mongolia
Today Mongolian Christians celebrate 20th anniversary of official foundation of Christian churches in Mongolia. According to 2010 national housing and population census, 41.117 Mongolians are registered as Christians.
Anniversary conference and concerts are being held throughout Ulaanbaatar today and remaining days of the week.
Before 1990, Mongolia was officially atheist country and banned religious activities. After Democratic revolution of 1990, Mongolia opened its doors wide open to Christian missionaries. Buddhism as traditional religion also revived and flourished.
Christianity, once considered a “foreign” religion is no longer considered alien as Christians are leading the effort to bring education and raise human dignity and improve living standard in Mongolia.
The anniversary celebrates official recognition of Christianity in Mongolia and acceptance of right for Mongolians to seek and find a spiritual path as individuals rather than dictated by tradition and culture.
Long before, in the times of Chinggis Khaan, some Mongolian tribes were followers of Nestorian Christian branch and open to new ideas and concepts. Many of leading Mongolians in the royal court of Chinggissid family were Christians.
According to Mongolian Evangelical Association, there are about 600 registered churches throughout Mongolia.
During 1990s, there were great many Christian-led social works and charity and social relief efforts to help impoverished people.
Thousands of Mongolian recovered their life from alcoholism, family abuse, violence , exploitation and depression and poverty.
