Mongolia, Russia discuss border issues

High-ranking Mongolian and Russian officials attending the Baikal Economic Form held a roundtable meeting on Mongolia-Russia border issues on September 13.

The Mongolian delegation included: D.Tsogtbaatar, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and head of the border and regional cooperation intergovernmental commission; D.Idevkhten, the Mongolian ambassador to Russia; and S.Bayar, MP. Officials from the following ministries also took part: Road, Transportation and Urban Development; Mineral Resources and Energy; Food, Agriculture and Light Industry; and Nature, Environment and Tourism.

Also in attendance were representatives of the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the State Specialized Inspecting Agency, and Mongolian businessmen.

The Russian delegation included: V.F.Basargin, the Minister for Regional Development; V.V.Samoilenko the Russian ambassador to Mongolia; M.A.Travnikov, the head of border and regional cooperation intergovernmental commission; and representatives of Irkutsk, Buryatia, and Altai.

The two sides exchanged information about the difficulties of managing the border. The Mongolian delegation raised concerns about cross-border railway transportation, environmental degradation, tourism issues, bureaucracy at Russian checkpoints, and the establishment if the Altanbulag free trade zone.

The Russian side proposed cooperative projects in agriculture and tourism.
