Finnish president meets with Mongolian leaders
Finnish President Tarja Halonen, who is in Mongolia on an official visit, has met with President Ts. Elbegdorj, Prime Minister S. Batbold, and Speaker D. Demberel.
Ms. Halonen and President Elbegdorj discussed education issues, and agreed that their two nations should try to work together on such issues. Ms. Halonen said that Finland is ready to cooperate with Mongolia on efforts to increase the reindeer population in Mongolia. She also spoke about the importance of increasing the number of women participating in politics.
Prime Minister Batbold told the Finnish president that he was grateful for her country’s support, including the extension of credit to Mongolia. He also said Mongolia is interested in developing partnerships with Finland in areas such as infrastructure projects, refinery technologies, and the battle against desertification. Mr. Batbold also said he would like to work with Finland on forestry and agriculture projects, and increase student exchanges between the two countries. He also said he would like to see Finland establish an embassy in Ulaanbaatar.
Speaker Demberel spoke with Ms. Halonen about parliamentary cooperation. He said parliamentary relations are crucial between nations, and he would like to see members of each nation’s parliament visit the other nation.
