Mongolian and Japanese calligraphers opened a calligraphy exhibition at the Mongolian National Art Gallery on July 22. Calligraphy has been developed and valued in both Japan and Mongolia. Ancient masterpieces are hanging on the wall of theMongolian National Modern Art Gallery. This is the first time that work’s by Japan’s famous masters of calligraphy, considered calling cards of Japanese art, have ever been displayed in Mongolia.

In an interview with Executive Director of the Mongolian Modern Calligraphers Association, D.Battumur, we learn more about the exhibition.

-What makes this exhibition distinctive?

-We’ve exhibited shows with Japanese calligraphers before. I opened a joint exhibition in Japan with people who can write calligraphy, such as three people who were previously a Japanese prime minister, members of Japanese parliament, and politicians. The main distinction of the exhibition is that the executive manager of the Association of International Calligraphy in Japan, Noda Koji, came to Mongolia and displayed artwork by famous Japanese calligraphy masters. The artwork displayed in the exhibition has travelled to 20 countries. We are planning to exhibit Mongolia’s master artworks in Japan next year.

-Which works of art are displayed?

-Shodo (Japanese calligraphy), literati and temple paintings are included. [We are] trying to show special Japanese techniques from all sides.

-What creations are displayed from the Mongolian Calligraphers Association?

-The Mongolian Calligraphers Association releases the “New Snow” exhibition, involving professional artists, annually. Being involved in the “New Snow” exhibition means an artist’s skill has improved.

-What exhibition will Mongolian calligraphers participate in after the joint exhibition?

-We are planning to exhibit in Japan. We are working to make peace in Asia, because Asian countries possess calligraphy art. We released an exhibition in North Korea before.

After the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Executive Manager of the Association of International Calligraphy in Japan, Noda Koji, gave us an interview.

-Let us know about your organization?

-Our organization has exhibited in countries in Asia and Europe for 20 years to introduce Japanese calligraphy and brush painting to the world. I am very delighted to be exhibiting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, together with artists of the Mongolian Calligraphers Association this year.

-What kind of artworks are mostly displayed by Japanese artists?

-We came to the exhibition with calligraphies and brush paintings. Those artworks included creations that are written by traditional and ancient methods. Abstract creations are also included.

-Can you evaluate Mongolian calligraphers artwork?

-We exhibited several expositions in China. At that time we became familiar with the artwork of Inner Mongolian calligraphers. Mongolian calligraphers’ creations are different from Inner Mongolian calligraphers. Mongolian calligraphers create more new and modern artworks.
