Zulqarnain falls in Olympic qualifiers, all eyes on Waseem

KARACHI: Another Pakistani boxer was shown the exit door as Zulqarnain Abbas lost to the Asian Championship bronze medalist Byamba Tuvshinbat from Mongolia in the welterweight quarter-final of the AIBA Asian Qualifying Round for Olympics at Kazakhstan’s capital Astana on Sunday.

The inexperienced Zulqarnain, who was picked for the vital assignment despite losing to Iran’s Sahrouz Torarideh in the first round of the preliminaries of the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing tournament in Islamabad last year, failed to offer laudable resistance against the seasoned Mongolian rival in the one-sided fight which the referee had to stop in the second round. Byamba won the fight 13-4 (61, 7-3) on RSC.

Of the five pugilists Pakistan have fielded in the vital affair, Zulqarnain became the third to be out, after England-based Haider Riaz and Niamatullah.

On Friday, the 18-year-old Riaz was outclassed by Turkmenistan’s Serdar Hudayberdiyev in his light welterweight category fight in the preliminaries 10-2, 5-2, 6-2, 0-0 and on Saturday, Niamatullah lost his bantamweight pre-quarter-final against the 2004 Athens Olympics silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand.

On Monday (today), Mohammad Nisar Sona will face Birzham Zhakypov of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals, while prolific Mohammad Waseem, who placed himself just a single win away from an Olympic berth after defeating Zarip Jumayev of Turkmenistan convincingly in the flyweight pre-quarter-final on Saturday, will face Nyambayar Tugstsogt of Mongolia in the quarter-finals.

Nyambayar crushed Mayengbam Singh Suranjoy of India in the pre-quarter-final also on Saturday.

As Mohammad Nisar has little chances of an Olympic berth because in his light flyweight category only one seat for the Asians is available, all eyes are on the Quetta-born Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Waseem as his victory today would help Pakistan return to Olympic boxing after missing the 2008 Beijing Games.

Waseem has the capability to beat the 19-year-old Tugstsogt who is not too experienced. Both Waseem and his Mongolian rival had to taste defeats in the preliminaries in the World Championship in Baku last year.
