Return ticket to Mongolia...
Four Banburyshire youngsters are busy preparing to drive to Mongolia and back in a 20-year-old car – all in the name of charity.
David Tapping and Tim Morgan from Banbury and Guy Laister and Zac Coleman from Chipping Norton – who are aged between 19 and 21 – are planning the trip of a lifetime and will be setting off for the remote country this summer.
Mr Laister said: “The idea came from me and Tim thinking that we wanted to do something ambitious for charity. And as we both like seeing new places we thought a trip to Mongolia would be perfect.
“I later talked Dave and Zac into this trip. Zac is used to go backpacking in places such as New Zealand, but Dave has never done anything over a three-hour car journey – so it’s a new experience for him!”
The adventurers have picked up a 1993 Austin Maestro because of its high ground clearance and simplistic technology; which they hope means it should be possible to fix with ‘bits of string’ if, or when, it breaks.
Mr Laister said: “We chose Mongolia because it’s literally as far as you can go east before needing special Chinese driving licences. Mongolia is also known because of its really bad terrain – perfect for our little old banger!”
The group’s chosen charity is Step by Step, which helps children who are living with disabilities – a natural choice as Mr Laister’s sister has cerebral palsy. The aim is to raise more than £1,000.
