Mongolian coalition government sets out policy direction

Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag, chairman of Mongolia's Democratic Party (Ardchilsan Nam: AN), formed a cabinet on 20 August 2012. This step followed long negotiations between the Justice Coalition (JC) of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (Mongol Ardyn Khuvisgalt Nam: MAKN), led by former president Nambaryn Enkhbayar, and the Mongolian National Democratic Party (Mongolyn Ündesnii Ardchilsan Nam: MUAN), the Civil Will Green Party (Irgenii Zorig-Nogoon Nam: IZNN) and different factions within the AN following the 28 June parliamentary election.

While the previous government was organised into 11 ministries and 43 agencies, the new government has 16 ministries and 28 agencies to implement its policies. As part of this shake-up, 15 agencies were dissolved and incorporated into corresponding government departments. Some ministries were divided, such as the Ministry of Mining and the Ministry of Energy, some were given new functions (Ministry of Environment and Green Development), and some were newly established, such as the Ministry of Labour.
