Pontypool pooch paints a pretty picture

MEET Roxy, perhaps Gwent’s most talented dog – the Picasso-esque pooch can paint and has recently created her debut work Daffodils and Despair.

The Bull Mastiff cross was taught by her owner who has travelled the world, observing dogs living with nomads in Mongolia, on the streets of Russia, pulling sleds in Lapland and within communities of the Atlas mountains in Morocco.

Now, 31-year-old Leigh Reynolds wants to put his experiences to good use and is launching a body and brain workout for dogs, which aims to physically and mentally stimulate Gwent pooches, while teaching them basic obedience.

Mr Reynolds, of Plas-y- Coed, Pontypool, has been obsessed with dogs all his life and when he was at school, he had his own dog walking round – convincing five neighbours to let him take their pets for walks.

After leaving school, he became a support worker in mental health and even though he wasn’t working directly with dogs, he incorporated them into the role.

He said: “I used dogs as a way of breaking the ice and it encouraged many people to engage. I even devised dog therapy programmes involving their pets.”

While Mr Reynolds has also worked teaching dogs tricks, his love of our four-legged friend took him to Lapland.

He went there to work with asylum seekers – but, the main reason was to get up close to huskie dogs.

Mr Reynolds travelled through Russia and Mongolia for three weeks before Christmas,.

He added: “In Mongolia, it’s like going back in time.

“It’s one of the last places in the world where nomads and wild dogs live, hunt and work together.”

He said dogs are “extremely motivated to live and work with people”, but just need training – something he has learnt from observing them.

His new business aims to foster “partnership working”

between owner and dog and as well as exercise and obedience such as bows, chasing, sprinting and jumping through hoops, there are other benefits.

“Dogs can be trained to use their nose to find keys and phones. It’s the best trick if you’re in a rush to go out and can’t find them,” he added.

It’s all about “positive reinforcements”, giving rewards for each step towards an eventual goal.

It’s how he taught Roxy to paint and the budding artist now picks up a brush in her mouth and shows how creative dogs can be.
