75 thousand tree seedlings donated to the Forestry

The Mongolian and South Korean united Nogoon Kherem (Green Wall) project has donated 75,000 tree seedlings to the Forestry to welcome the tree planting day which was founded by the President of Mongolia.
The donation took place at the opening of the Oijuulalt 2012 exhibition at the Central Palace of Culture of the Mongolian Trade Union. This year the tree planting day is set to be on May 2nd. The seedlings that are worth 150 million MNT will be distributed among 46 establishments free of charge. The seedlings were developed at the tree plantations of Dalanzadgar of Umnugobi province and Lun som of Tuv province by the Nogoon Kherem project. The project was started in 2007 to fight desertification in Mongolia by the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism and the Forestry of the Republic of Korea. At present the Nogoon Kherem project has planted trees in 900 hectares of land in Dalanzadgar of Umnugobi province and Lun som of Tuv province. Furthermore they conduct tree plantations and donate seedlings to independent organisations. Moreover, the Nogoon Kherem project organises courses for locals on maintaining plantations and forests, and gives people the opportunity to study and consult with specialists in South Korea.

This year the Nogoon Kherem project is focusing on developing and building green establishments in cities and settlements, whereas last year they developed green establishments around the provinces and rural areas. For this reason the project has given seedlings to general education schools, colleges and universities and other non-governmental organisations in Ulaanbaatar to build a green establishment. This year’s project focus is not only limited to settlements but Nogoon Kherem has also donated seedlings to Nogoon Azi organisation which has organised awareness campaigns and tree planting movements in the rural areas of Mongolia for many years. The project intends to help private plantation movements in the future.

Head of the Forestry of Mongolia M.Tungalag stated, “It is vitally important to fight desertification and also to provide better living conditions for residents of Ulaanbaatar. We will keep on working on this with the Mongolian and South Korean Nogoon Kherem in the future to achieve our goals.”

The General Organisor of Nogoon Kherem project Choi Jun Sog gave details about the project.

-For how long will the Nogoon Kherem project operate in Mongolia? How much land have you planned to plant trees in?

-The Mongolian and South Korean Nogoon Kherem project started in 2007. The project will operate until 2016. We have planted trees in 900 hectares of land; we are planning for 3000 hectares by 2016. Apart from planting trees in Dalanzadgar of Umnugobi province and Lun som of Tuv province our project also has a Mongolian and South Korean specialist council. Moreover, we train Mongolian state employees in the Republic of Korea.

-Today you are donating seeds to private organisations. Did you help to choose these non-governmental organisations and schools?

-You could say we chose them together. Our project requested that the Mongolian Forestry choose an organisation that is interested in planting trees and maintaining them. This is how the Forestry chose the schools and private establishments.

-Tree plantations take place every year but their results are questioned. How much do you monitor the maintenance and the results of your work?

-Planting trees takes time. The contract was signed by the government in 2007 and we begun planting in 2008. Last year we distributed seedlings in urban areas, this year we are operating in the cities and settlements. We will expand further in the future. Of course we don’t just distribute seedlings, but monitor growth as well. With the help of the Forestry we will review the plantations in the autumn and we will reward the organisations that did well and further supply them with seedlings. We are planning to work with the organisations that do well.

-What percentage of the seedlings grew successfully in last year’s provincial plantation?

-We review the plantations the following year. We distributed to many provincial organisations. Some organisations did their maintenance with excellence reaching 90% growth. Even a 70% growth is a considerable success when it comes to plantation. We are very satisfied with the increase of interest in planting trees by organisations and individuals each year.

During the event we heard some opinions of the participating organisations:

Social worker of 118 school, O.Gankhuyag: -Our school received 1001 seedlings. This will help greatly to improve our environment. Our school has 640 students; it’s the youngest national school. Our school is in Yarmag, thus dust is a major problem. Planting trees will help educate our student to take care of the environment and it’s also good for providing a healthy study environment.

Principal of 157 kindergarten, J.Sarangerel: -Our kindergarten participates every year in the “Nogoon kheremtei boltsgooyo” (Lets build a green wall) competition of the Nogoon Kherem project. We have been given 1700 seedlings of elm, aspen, ribes diacanthum and almond. We are planning to grow them in our kindergarten’s garden and distribute them to 30 other kindergartens in our district. Our kindergarten always tries to have as many plants and trees as possible and we are looking forward to having a garden full of greenery. If we don’t have flowers, butterflies won’t come to visit.
