Mongolia, U.N. agencies sign deals to realize MDGs

ULAN BATOR, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian government Tuesday signed agreements with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on realizing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Mongolia.

According to the agreements, called the Country Program Action Plans for 2012-2016, the UNDP will implement projects and programs in areas such as poverty reduction, MDGs achievement, democratic governance, environment and sustainable development, while the UNFPA will work in the fields of population and development, sexual and reproductive health and gender equality.

At the signing ceremony, Mongolian Foreign Minister Gombojav Zandanshatar said that the agreements were the outcomes of close cooperation among relevant government agencies, the public and the U.N.

It is expected that these documents will significantly contribute to the realization of the MDGs based on the National Development Strategy, the minister said.

"The headline of the UNDP program is inclusive sustainable growth. the UNDP is fully committed to working with the government of Mongolia and the people of Mongolia in accelerating progress to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and translating economic growth into tangible and sustainable benefits for all Mongolian people," said Sezin Sinanoglu, resident representative of the UNDP.

UNFPA representative Argentina Matavel Piccin said that many donors have closed their grant support doors as Mongolia becomes a middle income country, but the U.N. sees a new opportunity to make Mongolian economic growth really work for the people.
