Estonian Baruto claims first sumo title

TOKYO (AP)—Estonian Ozeki Baruto was presented with his first Emperor’s Cup on Sunday after winning the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.

Baruto finished the 15-day tournament with a 14-1 record after being defeated by grand champion Hakuho of Mongolia on Sunday’s final day of competition but was in a celebratory mood after receiving the winner’s trophy.

The 27-year-old Baruto wrapped up his first career title on Friday when he improved to 13-0 and Hakuho was handed his third loss of the tournament.

Baruto became the ninth foreign-born wrestler and second from Europe after Bulgarian Kotooshu to win a championship.
