DP considers pulling out of coalition government

There are reports that the Democratic Party will pull out of the coalition government, perhaps as soon as Tuesday.

Our correspondent asked DP officials about the reports, and they confirmed that the party is considering the move.

With the 2012 parliamentary election only about six months away, there are questions about how the coalition government should be disbanded. The DP could either pull out or wait until the current session of parliament ends. The DP’s National Consultative Committee is responsible for deciding whether to pull out of the coalition and whether to change the party’s chairman.

Its regular meeting was to take place last month, but the committee postponed it until the party’s series of Mongol Citizen 2020 forums is completed. The DP and the MPP, which formed the coalition government after the 2008 parliamentary election, have worked together for four years, but their cooperation will soon end, as both parties hope to capture an outright majority in the upcoming election. There are questions about how the MPP will react if the DP leaves the coalition. Some observers say, while the DP has helped the MPP, the end of the coalition will not be a big problem for the MPP. They say the MPP will neither acknowledge nor remember the DP’s help. The MPP’s biggest headache right now is the MPRP, though there are also reports that those two parties have made a truce. If the MPP and DP win roughly the same number of seats in 2012 that they currently hold, observers say it will be much harder for the two parties to form another coalition.

A proposed alliance between the Civil Will and Green parties has been delayed by politics, and the two parties have not started preparing for the election. That situation might be resolved if Green Party Chairman D.Enkhbat, MP Z.Altai, and Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry President S.Demberel join the CW and the party is renamed the Civil Will-Green Party, say experts. There are also discussions between the DP and the CW about forming an alliance. But in the end, Mongolia’s citizens will decide which party or parties will govern.
