President talks past, present, and future at honor assembly
On December 28, the State Great Khural assembled in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Mongolian Revolution of 1911. Since 2007, Mongolia has celebrated the anniversary of this historical revolution. The State Great Khural’s members, ambassadors of Mongolia, and ambassadors from other countries participated in this assembly by giving speeches focused on the meaning of the revolution and what the future holds for Mongolia.
100 years ago, on December 29, 1911 Mongolia declared independence led by Bogd Khaan against the struggling Manchu Dynasty, which dominated Mongolia for 200 years.
This year, the President made a speech that lasted about two hours, where he took the time to point out the historical significance of the day saying, “First of all I want to express my gratitude to the State Great Khural, which adopted a law to make December 29 a holiday because it’s an important event for Mongolia.
Mongolians fought for their independence, we didn’t simply go under the Manchu’s domination.”
Switching from the distance past to the much more recent, the President issued a sincere apology to all Mongolian regarding the July 1 events. He said, “I want to apologize because I couldn’t provide human rights or the right to life on that day.”
The booming Mongolian economy provided a more upbeat tone to his speech as he said, “The GDP is increasing, the economy is developing, but these things are not reaching citizens. Big business works are organized by the Government or organized by foreign companies. Now it’s time to provide domestic economic entities and facilities, whether it is a big or small business.”
In addition to the President, the Speaker of Parliament said, “Independence didn’t simply come one morning. Our ancestors and heroes have brought independence; struggling, organizing for a long time with their will, heart, and blood.”
Prime Minister S. Batbold added, “Mongolia’s first five ministries were organized 100 years ago. The Mongolian Government didn’t interrupt the operation of them. The Revolution of 1921 strengthened the Revolution of 1911. The Revolution of 1911 was the start and base of other revolutions. Mongolia has developed during these 100 years and now the whole world recognizes the independence of Mongolia.
Economic development is increasing. 10 years ago the GDP per capita was USD 300, but now it’s USD 3000. This is huge. The Government is planning to make it USD 10 thousand in 2016 and bring Mongolia to the level of highly developed countries in the next 20 years. ”
