MPP caucus discusses gas prices, politics

The MPP caucus met on Tuesday and discussed rising gasoline prices and the current political situation in the country.

During the meeting, caucus chairman U.Enkhtuvshin blamed the rising prices of gas and consumer goods on the political uncertainty caused by the DP’s decision to withdraw from the coalition government, Mongol Bank’s poorly-timed foreign currency auction, and the state’s failure to implement programs and projects in a timely manner.

U.Enkhtuvshin noted that, after the DP announced it was leaving the coalition, the cost of gas, goods, and services went up. He also noted that Deputy Mineral Resources and Energy Minister B.Ariunsan and the head of the Government’s Price Regulation Group agreed to petroleum importers’ request to increase prices on January 6. He said B.Ariunsan has allowed the price of a liter of AI-92 gasoline to rise to MNT 1,850; A-80 to MNT 1,550; and diesel to MNT 1,885. U.Enkhtuvshin pointed out that B.Ariunsan is a member of the DP and will leave the government once the DP pulls out of the coalition.

Some MPP members said the work of the coalition government was focused on developing the country and improving people’s lives, but they said the DP has decided to pull out of the coalition before completing that work.

U.Enkhtuvshin said the appointment of new ministers to replace DP ministers will be discussed after the DP’s National Consultative Committee formally approves the party’s withdrawal and the DP ministers resign.
